Decades of learning

April 6, 2017

We were pleased that both the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Teaching and Learning Laboratory and RELATE at MIT (Research in Learning, Assessing and Tutoring Effectively) were mentioned in your recent feature “‘If we don’t know how we learn, how on earth do we know how to teach?’” (23 March). However, the article states that RELATE and TLL were launched as the result of the Institute-wide Task Force on the Future of MIT Education created by MIT president L. Rafael Reif. In fact, TLL was founded in 1997, and RELATE hired its first postdoc in 2001. Both initiatives pre-date the task force, and between the two have been contributing to strengthening education at MIT for almost 40 years.
