Turn and turn again

December 15, 2016

Grant Guilford, vice-chancellor of Victoria University of Wellington, is entitled to his views about the need for New Zealand to become a “creature of the Asia-Pacific”, but they are not necessarily representative of the country’s higher education sector as a whole (“A new outlook: New Zealand's universities turn towards Asia”, News, 8 December).

If New Zealand’s universities have an ounce of sense, they will forge links with Asia while maintaining links with Europe and North America. Unfortunately, we suffer from the same problem as many universities, as noted in your article about the comments made by John Aubrey Douglass (“University leadership ‘poor’ quality, says higher education scholar”, News, 2 December). Academics are promoted into positions where they lack the necessary skills to perform well.
