Professor Marshall has been acting vice-chancellor since former incumbent Martin Hall retired with immediate effect in December.

She joined Salford as deputy vice-chancellor in July 2013, following a three-year stint in a similar capacity at the University of South Wales. Previously, she held senior positions at the University of Central Lancashire and the University of Cumbria.

Beverley Hughes, Salford’s chair of council, said: “Following a rigorous selection process, which included representation from academic and administrative staff and students, validated by independent advisers including a current vice-chancellor, Helen proved herself to be the outstanding candidate. It is a credit to the university that it has the talent to draw internally for this important position.”

Professor Marshall said she had been struck by “the enormous potential that exists to shape this university into an institution that nurtures outstanding talent and opportunity for its graduates”.

“Whilst we have a lot of work to do, I am relishing the opportunity to work with colleagues to establish Salford as an outstanding university,” she added.
