University of Wales, Cardiff

Ian Hargreaves, editor of the New Statesman, has been appointed professor of journalism. He was previously editor of The Independent (1994-96), deputy editor of The Financial Times and director of news and current affairs at the BBC.

University of Sussex

Alan Winters, professor and head of economics at the University of Birmingham and research manager of the development research group for the World Bank, has been appointed to a chair in economics from September 1998.

Joel Kahn, professor in the school of sociology, politics and anthropology at La Trobe University, has been appointed to the chair in social anthropology.

The following readers were appointed to professorships from April 1, 1998: Alan Howkins, social history; Robert Wagstaff, economics.

Richard Wilkinson, senior fellow at Trafford centre for graduate medical education and research at Sussex and associate director of the international centre for health and society, University College London, has been promoted to a professorial fellowship.

University of Ulster

Hugh McKenna, senior lecturer, has been appointed to the chair of nursing in a joint arrangement between the university and the NI Southern Health and Social Services Board. He is an executive member of the Royal College of Nursing's research society and the Mental Health Audit Committee in Newcastle upon Tyne. The following have been appointed to professorships: Bernadette Hannigan, biomedical sciences; Denise McAlister, school of public policy, economics and law; Stanley McGreal, school of the built environment.

Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts

David Barker, University of Ulster's school of fine and applied arts, has been awarded an honorary professorship by the academy for his work with art academics in China.
