Appointments and honorary fellowships

Adrian Thomas , professor of music and director of the Central European Music Research Centre at Cardiff University, has been named professor of music at Gresham College, London.

The University of Wales, Bangor, has awarded honorary fellowships to Philip Pullman , author of the "Dark Materials" trilogy and the 2001 Whitbread Book of the Year prizewinner; Jan Morris , author; Robin Llywelyn , managing director of Portmeirion village, North Wales, novelist and National Eisteddford Prose medallist in 1992; Hywel Gwynfryn , television and Radio Cymru broadcaster; John Roberts Williams , print and broadcast journalist and former head of the BBC in North Wales; John Houghton , former director general of the Meteorological Office, now chair of the Countryside Council for Wales and a member of the Joint Nature Conservation Committee; Griff R. Jones , industrial archaeologist, author and Association of Industrial Archaeologists prizewinner for fieldwork and recording; Glenys Kinnock , Labour spokesperson and government link of the European Parliament's Development and Cooperation Committee, vice-president of the Africa, Caribbean and Pacific States of ACP-EU Joint Assembly; and Bernard Rands , professor of music at Harvard University, whose works have been commissioned by the New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Internationale Bach Akademie in Stuttgart. An honorary doctorate of divinity will be presented to Rowan Williams , the archbishop of Canterbury and former archbishop of Wales.
