Anglia to drop 'poly' and go east

五月 8, 1998

ANGLIA Polytechnic University is to apply for a new name to shake off confusion over its status. Governors, staff and students have "almost unanimously" agreed to scrap the word "polytechnic" from the title, and to rebrand the institution as the University of Eastern England.

Director of marketing Roy Newson said: "People were bracketing us as one of those organisations aspiring to university status, rather than one that had university status since 1992."

The Privy Council, which will have to approve the new name, has advised the university that it must be specific about its location. A full title, the University of Eastern England at Cambridge and Chelmsford, will be put to governors in June this year, with a formal application to the Privy Council in July.
