The world's heaviest flying bird, the great bustard, has successfully hatched a brood of chicks in the UK for the first time in 177 years, thanks to the efforts of researchers. A team at the University of Bath is involved in a conservation project to reintroduce the great bustard using eggs from southern Russia. Tamas Szekely, principal investigator on the project, said the hatching on Salisbury Plain was "a very encouraging sign that the reintroduction will be successful".
