German conference to examine substitution of hazardous chemicals

April 2, 2002

Brussels, 29 March 2002

A conference on the 'Substitution of hazardous chemicals in products and processes,' supported by the European Commission's Environment and Health and Consumer Protection DGs, will take place on 13 and 14 June in Hamburg, Germany.

The event, organised by Ökopol GmbH and Kooperationsstelle Hamburg, is also being supported by the City of Hamburg.

The conference will examine substitution, a key proposal in the European Commission's White Paper on a future chemicals policy, as a 'policy and management concept.' It aims to raise awareness, encourage dialogue and stimulate creativity among industry, policy makers, scientists and the public.

Issues covered will include cooperation in substitution policy, lessons from successes and failures, and the policy measures and instruments needed to support the development and use of safer chemical products in Europe.

The views expressed at the conference will be documented and used to produce an industry guide on substitution.
