April 1, 2002

Brussels, 28 March 2002

The European Commission has announced it will contribute 1.6 million euro to a cyber tracker monitoring programme for 30 protected areas in Africa and Latin America.

The project, which will be financed under Article B7-6200 (environment, tropical forests) of the EU budget for the period 2002 to 2004, will monitor natural resource status, exploitation and human activities.

The programme will also promote the use of the cyber tracker as a tool to integrate new research tools, such as automatic calculations of indices of abundance and statistical analyses.
