University of Portsmouth

Research at the University of Portsmouth tackles this century’s most important challenges. We solve society’s problems and confront major issues facing the planet.

Cross-disciplinary research and collaboration with industry, governments and communities is a hallmark of our approach across five key research themes: health and wellbeing, security and risk, sustainability and the environment, future and emerging technologies, and democratic citizenship.

In REF 2014, some 78% of our research impact was rated as world-leading or internationally excellent. Today our researchers are exploring how social marketing can help battle India’s breast cancer crisis, revealing the secrets of the start of the Universe, opening up a new frontier in the fight against antibiotic resistance, using virtual reality to help prevent burglary and reform burglars, and reintroducing native oysters to bring new life to the Solent.

In 2020 we launched Revolution Plastics - a major initiative to transform the planet’s relationship with plastic. Through local and international collaborations, we’re exploring innovative ways to build a sustainable, circular economy. 2020 also saw the launch of our Centre for Blue Governance, where researchers work to secure the future of Earth’s marine and freshwaters.

A better world begins at the University of Portsmouth.
