University of Southampton - Search for Suffolk's lost city

The lost city of Dunwich, Britain's own Atlantis, has captured the imagination for centuries - and it could soon be revealed with a survey using underwater sonar. David Sear of the University of Southampton and Stuart Bacon, a marine archaeologist, will explore the remains of the Suffolk settlement in the early summer. Dunwich, 14 miles south of Lowestoft, was once a thriving port. In the 14th century, it rivalled London in size, but was afflicted by storms and erosion over the centuries. The project will use underwater acoustic-imaging technology to assess the remains of the city.
