The drop of 1 per cent between 2011-12 and 2012-13 came as demand declined in countries that traditionally send the most students to UK universities.

The number of students that came from India in 2012-13, for example, was down 25 per cent. Other places sent more students than in 2011-12, including Hong Kong, which sent 15 per cent more students.
