The university, which has around 30,000 students in total, halted the process of sending out the results by email after receiving student complaints.

One Liverpool member of staff says in an email to colleagues, seen by Times Higher Education, that the university has been “made aware of a system error with the issuing of results to students, leading to students being emailed the wrong results”.

“A number of students have contacted us this morning and we are doing all we can to explain the situation and reassure them,” says the email, sent by a university administrator.

A Liverpool spokeswoman said: “We experienced a technical problem when sending students their exam results this morning which resulted in students receiving the wrong email.

“As soon as the university identified the problem, the process of issuing emails with exam results was stopped and so the majority of students have not yet received any email.

“The university sincerely regrets this error and is doing all it can to ensure that students receive the correct results as quickly as possible. In the meantime, all erroneous messages have been deleted from students’ email accounts.”
