One of Geneva's eight faculties - Protestant theology - maintains the link with the university's foundation as a seminary by John Calvin in 1559. In 1873, the institution converted to secularism, and in the following century it attracted such intellects as Jean Piaget, George Steiner, Chaim Weizmann and Kofi Annan.
