The institution is now the oldest university in Florida and was founded as East Florida Seminary by Governor Thomas Brown in 1853. It is home to 16 colleges and more than 150 research centres and institutes. Some 50,000 students enrol annually. Tracy Caulkins, an Olympic Gold medallist, is a Florida alumnus.
