Trade and philosophy were core to the Athenaeum Illustre of Holland's "Golden Age", founded in 1632. Changing its name in 1877, the institution is home to 5,000 academic staff who teach 28,000 students in the humanities, social and behavioural sciences, economics and business, law, the natural sciences, medicine and dentistry.
