About Swinburne University of Technology

Swinburne University of Technology (Swinburne) is an Australian public university based in Melbourne. Founded in 1908 as a technical college, the institution received official university status in the early 1990s. Frequently performing well in the rankings of universities under 50 years old, Swinburne has a reputation for preparing graduates for life in the working world as well as for its research in science and technology.

The university fosters close ties with industry, business and governmental organisations to ensure that the research undertaken at Swinburne finds practical applications. The university offers courses over 17 broad subject areas providing qualifications at undergraduate and postgraduate level as well as shorter courses for professional development.

Swinburne is spread over three campuses in urban Melbourne and has another in Sarawak, Malaysia. Of the three Australian campuses Hawthorne is the biggest with modern academic and administrative buildings clustered around pleasant green spaces just 10 minutes away from the heart of downtown Melbourne. Hawthorne is also the home of the new multi-million dollar Advanced Technologies Centre and the Advanced Manufacturing and Design Centre.

The Wantrina campus located in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs is home to the university’s horticulture complex, nursing school and children’s services centre. The site also features the Knox Innovation, Opportunity and Sustainability Centre. The Croydon campus is home to the $10 million Flexible Green Trades Complex and provides practical training for a wide range of trades.

Swinburne’s Malaysian campus is in the city of Kuching, capital of Sarawak state and provides state of the art facilities, sporting and leisure services and teaching in science, business and engineering among others.
