In 1878, Sweden's flagship post-secondary institution opened its account with a series of natural-science lectures, a tradition kept alive today through annual public lectures. In 1899, Stockholm appointed Europe's third female professor, Sofia Kovalevskaya, to its mathematics chair. The alma mater of Olof Palme, Ingmar Bergman and Hans Blix, the institution now has around 28,200 students enrolled in four faculties.
