One of the few colonial-era universities in the US, it was chartered in 1766 as Queen's College but changed its name in 1825 to honour Revolutionary War veteran Colonel Henry Rutgers. It has more than 54,600 students served by a 4,150-strong full- and part-time faculty split into 27 schools and colleges ranged over three campuses.
