How do you get rich? Which college should you attend if you want to make lots of money? Which school churns out the most millionaires and billionaires?

Well, we aren’t offering any guarantees but we thought we would look at the world’s 500 richest people (according to the 2016 Forbes list of the world’s billionaires) and find out where each and every one of them went to college. For a billionaire alumnus to count towards our total, they must have successfully completed a degree (undergraduate or postgraduate) at that university. Simple.

Thanks to their successful business schools, Columbia University appear at the top of the billionaire leader board, with Harvard boasting a remarkable 35 alumni among the 500 billionaires. Colombia sits in second place with 12 billionaire alumni and Stanford is third with 10.

Ivy League universities dominate the ranking. The highest non-American institution is the University of Oxford, coming in at joint 12th alongside two American institutions, with four billionaire alumni. More than 90 per cent of the university alumni on the list are male.

Perhaps one of the more surprising things about the Forbes 500 rich list is the number of university dropouts among its ranks. The first and sixth-place positions on the list are held by Microsoft’s Bill Gates and Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, respectively, both are Harvard dropouts. Larry Ellison, the co-founder of Oracle, who sits in seventh place on the Forbes list, is another, while the world’s second-richest man, Spanish business magnate Amancio Ortega, dropped out of school at the age of 14.

In total, graduates represent more than £3.4 trillion worth of personal wealth in the Forbes 500 rich list. Some 53 per cent of those represented hold an undergraduate qualification, compared with 6.7 per cent worldwide. In addition, more than 18 per cent hold a master’s degree and about 3 per cent have a doctorate-level qualification. Degrees in business and law-related endeavours dominate the list.

Top six universities for producing billionaires

    1. Harvard University

Harvard University, one of the top law schools in the US, comes out on top of our ranking with 35 alumni, totalling $309 billion (£249 billion) in combined net worth – more than the entire gross domestic product of the Republic of Ireland. In fact, Harvard has more alumni in the top 500 than the next three universities on the list combined. The highest-ranked alumnus on the list, not including dropouts Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg, is former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg, worth about $40 billion.

    2. Columbia University

Columbia University comes in second on the list, with a total of 12 alumni. Among them is the wealthiest graduate in the world, Warren Buffett, who graduated with a master’s degree in economics in 1951. All in all, Columbia graduates are worth more than $170 billion – barely half that of Harvard, but still more than Algeria’s entire GDP.

    3. Stanford University

Next up, Stanford University contributes 10 alumni to this list, with a combined worth of almost $150 billion. Stanford’s highest-ranked alumnus is Google co-founder Larry Page, who holds both a master’s and PhD-level qualification from the institution.

    4. Cornell University

Based in the city of Ithaca, New York, Cornell University is one of three in the top six to contribute nine alumni to our ranking. Almost half the university’s billionaire cohort is from outside the US. Dmitry Rybolovlev, who made much of his money selling fertiliser and is now chairman of the French football team AS Monaco, has the highest net worth of any Cornell graduate at $7.7 billion.

    4. University of Pennsylvania

The University of Pennsylvania also contributes nine alumni to the list, primarily owing to the success of its Wharton School of Business. While this list is primarily concerned with graduates, there are a number of famous dropouts from the prestigious institution, such as the previously-mentioned billionaire investor Warren Buffet. Probably the most famous alumnus is Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, who graduated from the Wharton School of Business in 1968. His estimated worth is $4.5 billion.

    4. Yale University

Last but not least, Yale University also contributes nine alumni to this list. All but one of these alumni attended the university as undergraduates, with a diverse range of degrees between them, including electrical engineering, industrial administration and economics. Famous billionaire alumni of the university include Forrest Mars Jr and his son John Mars, members of the Mars family of chocolate-makers.
