University of York - New centre up for award

January 7, 2010

A new humanities and educational research centre has opened at the University of York. The £11 million, three-storey building, which houses a number of research units including the Institute for Effective Education and the Humanities Research Centre, was funded by a donation from the Bowland Charitable Trust and the Wolfson Foundation. The building is named in honour of Berrick Saul, the university's vice-chancellor from 1979 to 1993, and has been nominated for a GGB BDP Building of the Year award. The judges commended its "soft forms and intimate relationship with the landscape", which "create a calming, contemplative mood appropriate to its research function".
