Thelmas celebrations led by Newcastle

Newcastle University scooped the top prize last night at the Times Higher Education Leadership and Management Awards 2013

June 21, 2013

The Times Higher Education Leadership and Management Awards 2013 ceremony, held at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London, was attended by over 800 people and hosted by comedian Dara O Briain.

Newcastle won the outstanding leadership and management team category and was praised by the judges for investing £7 million in the “Newcastle offer” project, which aims to give students better teaching, employability skills and representation in the university.

The project is a five-year programme that hopes to convince students that they are getting something in return for paying higher tuition fees, introduced in 2012-13.

The University of Leicester picked up two awards, winning both the outstanding university fundraising initiative and outstanding marketing/communications team categories.

Leicester gained global attention when it unearthed the remains of the English king Richard III, and confirmed the identity of the remains in a live press conference in February.

“Their campaign on the importance of animal research and their search for the remains of Richard III were unparalleled media successes,” the judges commented.
