OECD Conference on Scientific Challenges for Energy Research - Paris, 17-18 May

The OECD Global Science Forum (GSF) is organising a two-day Conference on Scientific Challenges for Energy Research, which will seek to advance understanding of the scientific and technological challenges of a sustainable, mid-21st century energy system. The Conference will be held on 17-18 May 2006 at the French Ministry of Research in Paris.

This two-day Conference will elucidate the maturity, feasibility, principal scientific obstacles and R&D needs for new technologies for:

• oil and natural gas production
• bioenergy production and conversion
• coal conversion
• carbon capture and storage
• nuclear fission
• nuclear fusion
• solar energy conversion
• electricity storage
• electricity networks
• hydrogen production, storage and transport
• fuel cells

The conference aims to strengthen ties between basic research priorities and the potential returns in the energy domain and will reveal opportunities for enhanced international scientific cooperation.

Audience

The primary audience will be research funding organisations and others concerned with energy research priorities. The event is planned for approximately 200 researchers from basic and applied fields, officials of funding agencies, parliamentarians, industrial R&D managers, representatives of international organisations in the energy policy domain, and relevant organisations from civil society. Both OECD and non-OECD countries will be represented, on equal terms. Attendance is by invitation.

The conference is being planned in consultation with the IEA Ad Hoc Group on Science and Energy Technologies (AHGSET), and in conjunction with the OECD Sustainable Development Round Table on R&D Priorities and Programmes and Future Energy Technologies, 14-15 June 2006, Paris
