High Interest in Workshop for Galileo Receivers

Brussels, 23 March 2006

Today, more than 100 representatives from the satellite navigation industry gathered for a workshop to review progress and exchange ideas on Galileo - Europe's next-generation global navigation satellite system. The Workshop on Tools and Facilities for Galileo Receivers was held at the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC), in Noordwijk, The Netherlands. The workshop, an initiative of the Galileo Joint Undertaking (GJU) and co-organised with the European Space Agency (ESA), provided a forum for companies and research institutes, which are developing either Galileo receivers or developing tools and facilities for their testing and validation. It allowed participants to examine different technical possibilities, find development partners, identify future needs and foster networking. Rainer Grohe, Executive Director of the GJU expressed his satisfaction following the event: `The success of this workshop provides concrete evidence of the progress towards the development of Galileo user technologies. It has been an excellent opportunity for those concerned to meet with a common agenda and obtain up-to-date information on what is available for their development today.

Thanks to these projects, funded under the EU 6th Framework Programme, the first receivers for mass market applications such as location based services or car navigation will be available even before the final deployment of the Galileo constellation. We are pushing forward European technical know-how in receiver technology and preparing the market for take-off.'

The GJU is confident that the large number of participants attending the workshop today reveals the enthusiasm and motivation of European industry in the field of receivers.
