Heriot-Watt University - Quantum leap

January 7, 2010

Scientists have produced a quantum detector that outperforms all its predecessors. The state-of-the-art single-photon detector system has been pioneered by researchers at Heriot-Watt University on behalf of the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in Middlesex. It will enable scientists to carry out ground-breaking experiments in quantum metrology and quantum information processing, which in turn will help to ensure that the UK maintains its international lead in 21st-century technologies. The work has been led by Robert Hadfield, reader in physics, and Catherine Fitzpatrick, a research engineer who is sponsored by the NPL under the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council Photonics Engineering Doctorate Scheme.
