The title of professor emeritus has been conferred on: Kamal Andrawes, civil engineering; David Berry, bioscience and biotechnology; Tom Bone, deputy principal; Roy Burdon, bioscience and biotechnology; Robert Burgess, law school; Neil Graham, pure and applied chemistry; Brian Henderson, physics and applied physics; Ian Marshall, physiology and pharmacology; John Smith, bioscience and biotechnology; Brian Towers, human resource management.

Michael Leech, principal of Stevenson College, has been appointed visiting professor in the Scottish School of Further Education.

Kingston University

Professorships have been conferred on the following readers: Jean Woodall, human resource management; Jonathan Briggs, information systems; Peter Foot, chemistry; Robert Blackburn, human resource management.

University of Leeds

John Wood, has been appointed to a personal chair of differential geometry.

University of Surrey

G. Pavlou, former senior research fellow at University College, London, has been appointed to the Racal chair in the school of electronic engineering, information technology and mathematics; S. Witt, former Lewis chair of tourism studies, University of Wales, Swansea, has been appointed part-time professor in the school of management studies for the service sector.

University of Warwick

Jonathan Dollimore, former professor in the graduate research centre for the humanities at the University of Sussex, professor of English and comparative literary studies, with effect from October 1.

University of Birmingham

John Campbell, fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, has been appointed to the chair of casting technology. The chair is sponsored by T&N plc.

University of California, Berkeley

Julian Gardner, professor of the department of the history of art at the University of Warwick, has been invited to be distinguished visiting professor in medieval studies.

Keele University

Carole Hackney, former research fellow in biochemistry at UMIST and in zoology at the University of Manchester, has been appointed professor of auditory neuroscience.

King Alfred's College, Winchester

Professorships have been conferred on: Andrew Blake, head of the school of cultural studies and director of research for the school; Michael Hart, head of business studies: Anthony King, head of the department of archaeology.
