The news:

  • In February, as part of the mid-term review of the Lisbon Strategy, President Barroso proposed the creation of a European Institute of Technology “to act as a pole of attraction for the very best minds, ideas and companies from around the world.”
  • In autumn 2005, DG EAC conducted a wide public consultation on the key issues surrounding the creation of an EIT, including its objectives, added-value and possible structure. More than 700 contributions were sent to the Commission and analysed by its services.
  • In order to generate a more effective relationship between education, research and technology, the Commission will propose the creation of an EIT; the Communication shall set out the mission, the objectives and the proposed structure of the EIT.
  • In the medium term, the EIT could award something post graduate degrees and become a worldwide reference in higher education and research.
