John Winthrop Hackett, a newspaper editor and owner, founded the university in 1911. It was the first free higher education institution in the British Empire, actively promoting equal access to tertiary education for the masses. Today it has around 21,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students, 4,500 of them from overseas.
