Tobacco taxes and duties on furs and pelts initially underwrote this "public Ivy" (the colonies' second college, chartered in 1693). Here, presidents Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe and John Tyler, along with 16 Declaration of Independence signatories, were schooled. Its Sir Christopher Wren-designed edifice is the US' oldest college building. On 1,200 acres, around 600 faculty instruct about 8,000 scholars.
