This Baptist-founded private co-educational university's Wait Chapel has hosted two presidential debates: George Bush Snr v Michael Dukakis (1988) and George Bush Jnr v Al Gore (2000). Retaining its geographical name despite moving to Winston-Salem in 1956, the university closed down in 1862 after most of its students and faculty joined the Confederate Army. Enrolment today is around 6,900.
