The oldest university in the Nordic countries, founded in 1477, it dominates the town and has many traditions, such as lectures starting at a quarter past the hour for its 20,000 students and 3,600 academic staff. Its work ranges over three disciplinary domains: arts and social sciences; medicine and pharmacy; and science and technology.
