This scion of central England, founded in 1881, now receives more than 40,000 applications every year. In the 1920s a trio of high-profile lecturers visited its 330-acre University Park campus: Albert Einstein, H.G. Wells and Mahatma Gandhi. University Park is now supplemented by the Jubilee Campus, opened by the Queen in 1999. The university is home to some 33,500 students, more than 9,000 of them postgraduates.
