University of Leicester

Winner of the first University Challenge television series in 1963, Leicester teaches 13,000 of its 22,000 students full-time, the balance taken up by part-time and distance-education participants. The founding body began operations in 1921, a beneficiary of a donation by textiles manufacturer Thomson Fielding Johnson to create a living memorial to the First World War fallen.
