The oldest technological university in the US grew out of a school in Troy, 150 miles north of New York City. Founded in 1824 by Stephen Van Rensselaer, the school was designed to apply science to the "common purposes of life". Taking its current name in 1861, RPI offers the full spectrum of academic disciplines to some 6,700 students taught by a faculty of 450.
