"Spartans" have been graduating from MSU since it was founded in 1855, the prototype for 69 land-grant institutions. Today there are more than 47,000 students and an academic staff of just under 5,000 on its 5,200-acre East Lansing campus, grouped into 17 degree-granting colleges offering more than 200 study programmes.
