Japan's first Nobel laureate, Kyoto alumnus Hideki Yukawa, won the prize for physics in 1949, two years after the university gained its current name: since then there have been four more prizewinners from Kyoto's ranks. Its three campuses accommodate some 27,700 students and a faculty of around 2,900.
