Tech's roots lie in the South's Reconstruction after the US Civil War, changing its name from school to institute in 1948. Its 400-acre city-centre campus caters for around 20,000 students served by a faculty of about 900 scholars in six colleges: architecture; computing; engineering; liberal arts; management; and sciences.
