Colorado School of Mines

When Mines opened in 1874, geophysical exploration for fossil fuels and minerals was the name of the game. This still plays a major role, but alongside other applied sciences at the frontiers of renewable energy and microfluidic devices. A faculty of 340 oversees 4,500 "Orediggers" on its 373-acre Rocky Mountain foothills campus.
