Much to rival city Calgary's chagrin, the prairie province's university opened 102 years ago in the provincial capital, Edmonton, the outcome of one skirmish in what became known jocularly as the Battle of Alberta. Today, subjects studied by 37,000 students assigned to its 18 faculties employing around 3,500 staff include native studies and rehabilitative medicine.
