Court date for union in bid to stop Strathclyde cuts

Academics at the University of Strathclyde are set to protest outside a meeting of the university court today to oppose planned cuts that could endanger more than 100 jobs.

Members of the University and College Union will lobby the court this morning as senior managers meet to decide upon restructuring plans that could result in the job losses.

The union said it believed that the meeting represented merely the first wave of jobs cuts and restructuring at Strathclyde and it had “deep concerns” over the plans’ academic and financial viability.

It has submitted an alternative proposal, to be considered at the meeting.

Protestors will urge members of the court to vote against Strathclyde’s plans.

Mary Senior, UCU Scottish official, said: “Strathclyde has a proud reputation for delivering a wide-ranging educational experience, from teacher education and social work to law and politics as well as science, engineering and technology.

“UCU is urging the university not to put all of this at risk by making swingeing and short-sighted cuts just as a new Scottish government – committed to funding higher education – is being formed in Holyrood.”

A spokeswoman for Strathclyde said: “The Scottish higher education sector is facing a significant shortfall following cuts to its funding. As a leading international university, Strathclyde is well placed to meet the financial challenges ahead, but must take steps to absorb the cuts in a measured way.”
