IN DETAIL

Award winner: S.P. Beeby

Institution: University of Southampton

Value £910,196

Energy-harvesting materials for smart fabrics and interactive textiles

Dr Beeby's project will seek to create the next generation of smart fabrics - materials that have the ability to sense stimuli from the environment and react or adapt to them in a predetermined manner. He will focus on energy-harvesting techniques and will look to create materials that can gather thermal energy from the human body as well as kinetic energy from motion. By using rapid printing processes and active printed inks, Dr Beeby plans to create low-cost and rapid ways to harvest energy that could also have applications in health monitoring, consumer products and the automotive industry.
