Aston University - Out of the ashes

10 June 2010

A team of academics has visited the Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland as part of a study into evacuation procedures during major disasters. The visit was undertaken by scholars from the Centre for Research Into Safety and Security at Aston University as part of the European Union-funded project, Evacuation Responsiveness by Government Organisations. The team's recommendations following the visit focused on more efficient and effective methods to analyse and prepare for mass evacuation, including proposals for preparing the public, disseminating warning messages, traffic management, streamlining the evacuee- registration process and shelter-management plans.
