Letter: Janet and adverts

February 23, 2001

Following Charles Crook's stimulating article ("Spare us logo land", THES, February 2) readers may be interested to know that the Joint Information Systems Committee ( http:///www.jisc.ac.uk/ ) is funding a three-month study into "Advertising on the Janet" academic network.

The University of Strathclyde is the lead site in a consortium that includes the United Kingdom Office for Library and Information Networking ( http:///www.ukoln.ac.uk/ ) and the National Cache ( http:///wwwcache.ja.net/ ).

The project will be looking at the Janet Acceptable Use Policy ( http:///www.ja.net/documents/use.html ), the impact of advertising on network traffic, potential income and cost-effectiveness and seeking the views of the sector on advertising over the Janet. We also want to know what is happening with www advertising in the academic community in other countries and the views of the advertising industry.

The principal contact for the project is Diane McDonald ( D.McDonald@strath.ac.uk ).
