McDonnell-Pew Program in Cognitive Neuroscience 1999 Investigator-Initiated Grants

The McDonnell-Pew Program in Cognitive Neuroscience is a collaborative effort established by the James S. McDonnell Foundation, St. Louis, Missouri and The Pew Charitable Trusts, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to support research.

Priority will be given to researchers seeking interdisciplinary training and collaborations with persons outside their own discipline. The awards will provide a maximum of $50,000 per year, up to three years. The programme particularly encourages research on higher cognitive functions, for example, language, planning and problem-solving. Eligibility: There are no US citizenship restrictions or requirements, nor must the proposed work be conducted at a US institution, providing that the sponsoring organisation qualifies as tax-exempt under IRS guidelines. American Philosophical Society

The society promotes useful knowledge in the sciences and humanities through excellence in scholarly research, professional meetings, publications, library resources, and community outreach. Eligibility: applicants may be US residents, American citizens on the staff of foreign institutions, or foreign nationals whose research can only be carried out in the US. Grants are made to individuals; institutions are not eligible to apply. Written requests for forms should include a self-addressed mailing label and the following information: indication of eligibility; nature of the research; proposed use of the grant funds. Foreign nationals must state what objects of research they need access to, available only in the US. Telephone requests for forms cannot be honoured. However, questions concerning the eligibility of a project, or the use of funds are accepted at 215-440-3429. General Research grant program

Eligibility: applicants are normally expected to have a doctorate, but applications are accepted from persons whose publications display equivalent scholarly achievement. Grants are rarely made to persons who have held the doctorate for less than one year, and never for pre-doctoral study or research. Scope: proposals may be in all areas of scholarly knowledge except those in which support by government or corporate enterprise is more appropriate. Maximum award: $6,000.

Societe de Chimie Industrielle (American Section) and the Chemical Heritage Foundation (CHF)

Emphasises basic research in the history of the chemical sciences, scholarly publications, and the building of a strong chemical presence in the world of academic and public history.

The Societe de Chimie Industrielle (American Section) Fellowship provides up to $15,000 for stipend, living expenses, and research support. The fellow will spend a minimum of two months in residence at CHF, conducting research on some aspect of the heritage of the chemical sciences or chemical process industries using the resources of CHF's Othmer Library of Chemical History, other area libraries, and associated resources. The purpose of the fellowship is to stimulate public understanding of the chemical industries. Applications are encouraged from writers, journalists,educators, and historians of science, technology, and business. Applicants should submit a CV and a one-page research proposal outlining a specific project to be completed while in residence at CHF, and showing how the project will further public understanding of the chemical industries. In addition, applicants should arrange for two letters of reference to be sent directly to CHF.

Juvenile Diabetes Foundation

The Juvenile Diabetes Foundation (JDF) is a not-for-profit, voluntary health agency whose main objective is to support and fund research to find a cure for diabetes and its complications.

Deadlines for Research, Fellowship, and Career Development applications are March 1 and September 1.

A copy of the first two pages of the application must be received no later than February 15 and August 15 respectively. If the first two pages are not received by these dates, the full application will not be accepted.Deadlines for innovative grant applications are April 1, July 1, and October 1. A copy of the first two pages of the application must be received no later than March 15, June 15 and September 15 respectively.

Sponsoring organisations may be for-profit or non-profit, academic or industrial, or domestic or foreign. Regular Research Grant

Supports research for up to $100,000 per year and for two years. Both new and/or established researchers are supported. Proposals must be a scientific research project involving the cause, treatment, prevention, and/or cure of diabetes and its complications.

Special Research Grant

Recognising that some research cannot be conducted within the financial limits and time constraints of a regular research grant, JDF will consider requests over $100,000 per year with a term of support beyond two years with prior approval.

Innovative Grant

Supports highly innovative basic and clinical research that is at the developmental stage by providing "seed" money for investigative work.

Postdoctoral Fellowship

Designed to attract qualified, promising scientists entering their professional career in the diabetes research field. The applicant is required to work with a sponsor who can provide a training environment most conducive to beginning a career in diabetes-relevant research. By the beginning of the period of support, the applicant must have a doctoral degree or the equivalent from an accredited institution and must not be simultaneously serving an internship or residency.

Mentor-based Postdoctoral Fellowship

Supports the training of scientists in an environment conducive to beginning a career in diabetes research. Grants will be given to an established and active investigator in diabetes research. The project must be one already funded by a national funding agency such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH), medical research council (MRC), or equivalent, and the fellowship will provide stipend support for the fellow. By the beginning of the period of support, the fellow must have a doctoral degree or the equivalent from an accredited institution and must not be simultaneously serving an internship or residency.

Career Development Award

Designed to assist exceptionally promising investigators. Although JDF is especially interested in fostering careers in clinical investigation, Career Development Awards may emphasise either basic or clinical topics.

Integrated Genomics Technologies (RFA: RR-99-003)

This Request for Applications targets new, innovative, multidisciplinary efforts to develop integrated genomics technologies, which will lead to the biologists' tools of five or more years hence. The resulting highly integrated technologies will be capable of high-speed serial or highly parallel analyses at a sensitivity level capable of single-cell genomics analysis. Such technologies will enable new levels of understanding of cellular processes.

Eligibility: applications may be submitted by US and non-US, for-profit and non-profit organisations, public or private. Funds available: it is expected that four to eight awards will be made and $4 million will be designated for this purpose.

Microbial/Disinfection By-Products Council Request For Proposals Replication of Study of Spontaneous Abortions and Disinfection By-Product Exposures (RFP 2579)

The goal of this project is to determine if the results reported by Waller et al. (1998) can be replicated in areas of the United States other than California. Specifically, this project will investigate whether exposure to trihalomethanes (THMs) and individual THM species, (especially bromodichloromethane), haloacetic acids species (HAAs), or other disinfection by-products (DBPs) may be associated with an increased risk of spontaneous abortion (SAB). If feasible, other reproductive endpoints may be included in the study.

Research Opportunities in Space Life Sciences: Advanced Human Support Technology

Proposals requested by this Announcement may be for ground-based research investigations or space-flight experiments designed for space craft such as the Space Shuttle or the International Space Station. This announcement is specific to the Advanced Human Support Technology (AHST) Program within the Life Sciences Division. The AHST Program includes the following three elements: Advanced Life Support, Advanced Environmental Monitoring and Control, and Space Human Factors Engineering.

British Archaeological Association - Ochs Scholarship

The Ochs Scholarship is awarded annually for research projects concerning the study of archaeology, art and architecture from the Roman period to the 19th century, primarily in the British Isles and Europe. Applications are invited from students who are completing theses for postgraduate degrees and who have no access to other sources of funding. Pounds 5,000 is available annually.

Of particular interest are the process of new product design and development.

The Research Foundation seeks to sponsor research which prompts the theoretical development of management accounting, throws light on developments in practice, and which assists in the development of best practice in particular contexts. The maximum funding for an individual project is Pounds 80,000.
