On the rise: spending on R&D in the UK

About £7.6 billion worth of research and development was carried out in higher education in 2013

This is an increase of about £0.4 million over the 2012 total, and the first significant rise in spending since it fell in 2009, says the Expenditure on research and development performed in higher education report. The amount spent on research in universities remained mostly unchanged between 2010 and 2012. The report, published on 24 March, reveals that the amount invested in university research and development has increased from about £6 billion a year in 2002.
