As a student reading Shakespeare for the first time, admiring Shakespeare is noting unusual but all the first impressions about him fall into place after being introduced to the concepts of Stoicism and Epicureanism. The article is an interesting analysis.

I`m not commenting on the books cited in this article. But Bate parrots that hoary cliche that it`s `coincidental` when the `same topic` crops us hither-and-yon amongst academics. Bate,` go tell it to the marines`, as our american cousins would say.

An enlightening and fascinating connection. I have long been a sympathizer of Epicurean philosophy and have loved Shakespeare's plays even longer. But I had never made the connection. Montaigne provides a fascinating link and I will be going back to read Epicurus, Shakespeare and Montaigne to appreciate this. I can't help but admire Shakespeare even more for showing as much wisdom in his life.
