Knowledge of anatomy and physiology is essential for all nurses and healthcare professionals, but can seem daunting at the start of one's career. Aimed specifically at students and those returning to nursing, this book should dispel any fears. It informs the reader of the key facts, but the authors are mindful not to overwhelm their readers nor to over-burden with detail.

There is concise information about the major body systems supplemented by highlighted text that breaks down the information into easily understandable language, with learning hints along the way - and provides ammunition for readers to impress friends with amazing facts about the human body.

Although the authors are American, this text has been adapted for the UK so students should not be put off by the odd photograph with reference to a US paramedic. What works particularly well are the detailed graphics throughout the book. Explanatory drawings help the reader visualise written descriptions and should aid understanding. An added bonus is a set of questions to test newly acquired knowledge, with the option of a companion website.

Overall, the book provides sufficient background information as an introductory textbook. It would also be useful in reinforcing existing knowledge, or as a quick reference for the seasoned professional. But for anyone wanting to delve deeper into the subject, this book would simply not supply that level of information.

To be fair, the authors' intention was to create an introductory textbook, and that is exactly what they have done. It is hard to find fault, as the structure, layout and text are easy to follow and informative for the intended target group. It is an ideal book to have close by for anyone studying nursing.

Who is it for? Nursing undergraduates.

Presentation: Good.

Would you recommend it? Yes, as an introductory textbook for those entering the world of nursing.
