THE Leadership and Management Awards 2011: Shortlist

Shortlist picks out the people who help keep universities running even in the toughest of times

THELMA

Having sifted through almost 200 entries from 95 different institutions, we can now unveil the shortlist for the Times Higher Education Leadership and Management Awards 2011.

The annual awards come at a time of unprecedented change as the sector prepares for the shift in funding with the introduction of higher tuition fees in England in 2012.

The shortlisted entrants are competing in 16 categories ranging from top library team and best in marketing and communications to the outstanding student services team and those who have delivered the best departmental administration. Other categories cover procurement, research management, university finance and human resources.

The six institutions contesting the top honour - the title of outstanding leadership and management team - are: University of Bath; Birkbeck, University of London; University of Cumbria; University of Exeter; Harper Adams University College; and University of Leicester.

Ann Mroz, editor of THE, said: "Our annual awards always serve as a reminder of the extraordinary quality and dedication of those working in our universities and colleges.

"This year is no exception. Our sector, like every other, has already gone through some tough times and is facing more turbulence as the new funding regime beds in. But a glance at the shortlist for our Leadership and Management Awards is enough to instil confidence that we have the right people in place to continue to prosper and deliver the world-class higher education for which the country is rightly renowned."

The winners of this year's awards will be announced at a ceremony at the Grosvenor House Hotel in Park Lane, London, on 16 June.

Readers' comments (1)

  • How is Brunel University even nominated?! They just announced with less than a month's notice that they will be closing off essential subject areas for maintenance over the course of the summer - leaving all of their postgraduate students without valuable resources while working on research projects and dissertations. To make matters worse, the email blast that was sent out wasn't even sent to all students, so those students that didn't get the email were left to find out on their own. This isn't a library that's worthy of being awarded if that's how they treat their students.
