Appointments: Commission names Deputy Director-General for Research

The Commission yesterday appointed Mr Daniel JACOB as Deputy Director-General in charge of Community Research Programmes.

Mr Daniel JACOB, 56, is currently the director responsible for Staff regulations, policy, management and advice in the Directorate-General for Personnel and Administration (DG Admin) (Directorate B).

From September 1999 until February 2003, Mr Jacob worked as Head of cabinet for Philippe Busquin, the Commissioner responsible for Research.

From July 1999 until September 1999, Mr Jacob was Head of Unit (Maritime Transport – Internal market and implementation of Community law) in the Directorate General for Transport.

From January 1995 until June 1999, Mr Jacob was Deputy Head of Neil Kinnock’s cabinet, Commissioner responsible for Transport and TransEuropean networks.

From June 1994 to December 1994, Mr Jacob was Deputy Head of Commissioner Bruce Millan’s cabinet, Commissioner responsible for regional policy and relations with the Committee of the Regions.

Prior to that, Mr Jacob, a lawyer by training has gained extensive experience as Member of Commissioner Bruce Millan’s cabinet, Member of Commissioner Clinton-Davis’s cabinet and Member of the Commission’s Legal Service. He has also been Member of the Brussels Bar, specialising in labour law and European Community law. Mr Jacob is a Belgian national.

Mr Jacob will take up his duties at a date still to be defined in the coming weeks.
