Brussels, 20 Sep 2006

The European Commission's Directorate General for Energy and Transport has issued a call for tenders for the establishment of European technical recommendations for monitoring individuals exposed to external radiation. Workers occupationally exposed to ionising radiation are monitored by the use of individual dosimeters. The respective radiation monitoring recording and reporting systems have to fulfil specific requirements concerning accuracy, performance and uncertainty. In this context, the European Commission issued in 1994 technical recommendations for monitoring individuals exposed to external radiation (Radiation protection series No 73). In view of the rapid technological development of radiation monitoring systems, these technical recommendations need to be revised. The aim of this study contract is to establish new technical recommendations, taking into consideration particularly the development and introduction of electronic personal dosimeters EPD and computerised national dose register. The technical recommendations are addressed to Member State regulatory bodies aimed at laying down European wide common criteria for approval of dosimeters and dosimeter services. The document also forms the basis for a mandate to CEN/CENELEC and ISO for establishing European and International norms and standards for dosimeter systems.
